OUGD404 Design Principles: Studio Brief 1 - What is Visual Literacy
The Brief:
After looking at the examples of ‘negative space’ both in typographic terms and even in photographic terms the workshop is to choose a word i.e. HALT (Typographic) Upper or lower case and see what element you can add to use with or replacing the identified space to create an image suggested by the chosen word/element.
Within the time available, you may render this in any way you choose, if you wish to Mac up, and you feel you have time, go for it otherwise by hand if it suits you as a creative.
After looking at examples of negative, I took John's advice of not over thinking it, and quickly thought up words and made initial ideas using negative space. For the majority of my designs however, I used letters and words to create a shape, rather than using the letter to merge and shape within it. Therefore I developed the idea of 'Moon' using a crescent moon to place within the 'O' while using colour to make this idea clearer. While when I developed the idea of 'APPLE,' I used shapes to cut out parts of the letter to contrast, which I think has worked quite well. I think the use of negative space is really interesting and certainly is really effective for creating logo's. I think this effect is definitely something I will look to using now within my work and definitely if I ever need to create a logo. I find these design principle sessions really insightful for learning different skills and new ways of thinking for ideas and designs. These examples below I find particularly interesting, especially the 'Safari into Africa' logo, I think the use of negative space within the elephant has worked so well, I think simple, but effective designs are the most effective and memorable logos.
