OUGD406 Studio Brief 3 - Development

OUGD406 Studio Brief 3 - Development

Once we created initial designs from our ideas, we started to all work on these further to create our logo from. We used my idea of using the Leeds College of Art logo as a basis for our designs, we used this played around with shape, colour and line to see how we could work with this idea.

We first came up with this idea which we all agreed upon and decided to go with. This one worked for us due to the bright colours going against each other and the overlapping shapes create this shape that doesn't immediately link to the Leeds College of Art logo as we didn't want it to be too obvious. When experimenting with types we decided on Gill Sans and Helvetica Ultra Light as we felt both had a very professional feel to them.

Once we were working with our individual roles however, we all agreed that this design looked even more professional so we decided to change our logo to this design. We thought that this design could be worked with a lot more as well as the top layer (black line) would in fact be a sheet of acetate paper which will keep the concept of 'pages' intact, and also can be used for other things such as the name tags.

My individual role was to produce the invitations. We all thought about using the actual shape for most of the branding rather than your typical A4 or A5 rectangular posters. I did however want to test out a rectangular A5 poster therefore I created this as an idea. I still used the shapes but within the rectangular poster so the shape is consistent. I also created an invite that was actually within this shape and would work as a little book to keep the concept of pages. I also created a poster like this to show this idea can be applied to our other brandings, as I suggested that a poster in this actual shape would be a lot more eye catching.

Group Pitch

 Feedback

I believe our feedback after our group pitch had fair comments and confirmed some of my thoughts too. Our group suggested that we would all create our own assigned roles then bring them together for feedback from everyone. Unfortunately not all of our team members did this so things such as the leaflet I had not seen before and would have suggested a lot more work to be done to it. However, after this pitch we all sat down and decided to completely go over our designs so that it is more striking.

Further Development

We worked on brighter colours for our logo due to the comments that our designs don't really stand out. We all tired our own experiments and narrowed down our favourites. From this we then asked Simon which he preferred to which then he made his own mockup to show us and hep us in which direction to go in.

These were the examples he showed us. We all agreed however that we did not want to just use Simon's example and none of us were really keen on the choice of colours together.

Therefore we played around with colour and came to this as a final colour choice. We did experiment with other colours but we felt the pink and yellow together really was eye catching which is what we wanted to focus on after our previous designs being too safe.

This is our final design for the exhibition branding. We feel that this is a lot more striking than our previous designs and the choice to have Level 4 and 5 on the logo emphasises the exhibitions key selling point.

We then applied this to other ideas for branding ready for our final pitch. We still wanted to use acetate for the concept pages and produced mock ups of all of these for the pitch.

I also created this floor space plan for the exhibition, my idea was that (if feasible) that the covers could also be hung from the ceiling like like shelves, so that it is as if you are walking up and down these columns like you would in a library. In addition as there is a lot of covers in such a small exhibition space, the covers would be scattered around the walls, including some high and low so the space is a bit more interactive.

I also came up with our budget as followed:

200 Name Tags - A4: £150
100 Invites - A4: £75
50 Posters - A2: £150
150 Leaflets - A4: £112.50
20 Signage - A4: £15
1 Banner: £8

= £504.50

Our target audience was Designers but primarily students as are unique point of the exhibition is that its a student exhibition rather than your typical graduate exhibition. In addition we also use either bull dog clips to hang the covers and if we cannot use nails, then we will use picture hanging strips.
