OUGD406 Studio Brief 3 - Research

OUGD406 Studio Brief 3 - Research

Leeds Central Library & Leeds Art Gallery

We all went to Leeds Library to have a look at the space we would be exhibiting in and it gave us good ideas. The space was well lit by natural light but it was also quite a small space so how the book covers would be exhibited was something we really needed to consider. There were also blue circles hung from the ceiling which was interesting and made us consider using the colour to blue in our designs to mirror these circles. Once we got in we all agreed that signage was an important part of the branding as we struggled ourselves to find out where the gallery space was. We agreed that we would need signage going along the stairs to guide people along to where they would need to go. In addition we also went into the art gallery right beside it as we thought it would be interesting to see how they have branded their exhibition. We found that the exhibition included a banner which we had not previously thought of but thought was key to have in our branding. We also took a lot of leaflets and I have taken leaflets from other exhibitions that I have been to for inspiration for our own leaflet.

Second Hand Research

Pinterest was also a good tool to find really interesting and creative branding ideas. It was interesting also to see how these brands kept consistency throughout all of their designs. All are very different but each have their own uniqueness, I particularly like the interactiveness of some and think this would be a good element to include within our own branding. One of the images shows acetate layered which links really well to our concept of 'pages' and would be really interesting to consider this in our designs to clearly show pages. Name tags as well is an important aspect, and as printing directly onto a wall as Leeds Art Gallery have done, blocks shown in the images which are raised with relief tape could also be an interesting approach as this is the most common way of displaying name tags, therefore giving a very professional approach. The last image is definately a favourite of mine and reminds me of the book fair branding at the Tetley. I think the continuous lines representing a book in a subtle way works so well in that it is subtle but very effective. The design is minimal but very striking and creative which I hope our branding achieves.
