OUGD403 Studio Brief 1 - Production

OUGD403 Studio Brief 1 - Production

After researching and developing into my word 'dynamic,' I have come to create 10 final designs which I will then take one forward for Studio Brief 2. My research has definitely informed my designs, while experimenting has allowed me to see which designs work best best and which do not.

This first two designs are based around the idea of dynamic as versatility. I wanted to create a design that could be incorporated into most things. As Futura was my chosen typeface, I used this as a starting point for these designs and made small adjustments to them. The first was cutting off pieces of the letters and cap height to make all the letters link in with one another. The second was creating Futura a serif font, and creating my owns serifs to add on. I think the whole look of both work well however I do not believe they are both versatile, defeating the point of these designs, however, it was really interesting playing around with Futura and creating a whole different look just by subtle changes and adding serifs.

This design is the same idea for the idea of versatility. Yet I began creating a bit more movement in the typeface as when I personally think of dynamic, I think of movement and energy. Therefore I began by adding serifs to the typeface as before but playing around with the curves of the letters to create more movement, particularly the 'B.' I think this design was more a stimulus for my other designs and more a development type, I feel this design does not match up and doesn't have the strong connection of letters throughout, yet it certainly influenced my other designs.

This was a simplistic design based around the same idea of versatility. I thought that if you were to make something versatile then it should be minimal. Therefore I took Futura and took it down to a simple form by thinning the letters, I think this has created quite a futuristic look and actually fits in with aerodynamics as it has quite science fiction feel to it.

This design was based around the definition of dynamics as constant change. Therefore for each letter I have had constant change in the design of the letters. Starting with a traditional style font, gradually going along to more modern fonts. I quite like this idea in terms of the definition of dynamics, however it would not work as a body text but was interesting to create.

This was the idea of the definition of dynamic as energy. I wanted to create a free flowing design that had a lot of movement. I feel that this design works well and you can really get a sense of energy from the design, and that if I were to digitalise it, you could tell it had been a hand rendered design.

I took this design from the definition of dynamics as aerodynamics. Which is the study of the properties of moving air and the interaction between the air and solid bodies moving through it and the properties of a solid object regarding the manner in which air flows around it. Therefore I used the minimal, thinner adjustment of Futura and drew lines twisting and flowing round it in the same shape as the letter, to represent the moving of air around the object. I quite like this design however, when I wrote out the word 'dynamic' I don't think the letters work well together and are not aesthetically pleasing.

This design is the interpretation of dynamics as musical dynamics. In music, dynamics normally refers to the volume of a sound or note - staccato and legato. Therefore for this design I looked at musical notes and felt that the design should be quite scripted, in addition for the weight of bodies to be contested to represent a musical note. Together, when put into a word I quite like how the design flows into one another, and does also have the element of energy and movement. I think it would be really interesting to develop this idea to have each letter join to one another and have a point of connection.

This was also based around the idea of music, but instead I was looking at sound waves and sound systems. I designed the pattern to replicate this idea and added them onto the designs as serifs. I think it gives the design a 70s music era feel which relates back to the soul concept of music.

My final 10th design was informed by the design idea of energy and movement. I exaggerated my previous design to create quite a dramatic design that clearly shows a lot of movement and energy. I really like how this works together and looks as a whole, however I think in terms of creating a grid, it would be difficult and isn't suitable for a body text.
