OUGD404 Design Principles: Studio Brief 01 - What is Visual Literacy?

OUGD404 Design Principles: Studio Brief 01 - What is Visual Literacy?

   Anatomy of Type

During this session we learnt a lot about how to develop your own typeface and the different characteristics and elements of each letter form. As we merged the letters we had to create our own, it was interesting to take the prominent characteristics of other typefaces, and merge them all into one to create a completely new letter, as seen above. For ours the stroke of white, different body weights and the serifs were the key features of our letters forms, so we merged them to together to create 'Didot Pro Obscura.' This is a new method of creating a completely different typeface by taking other characteristics and forms, rather than designing one from scratch. In addition Amber also taught us about forming letters, such as taking the curves and brackets from one letter to create another, for example taking the bowl of the e and turning into the curves of an s. After we were then told to chose a word to represent our letter form and design a costume in the same nature of the word. It was interesting seeing the different descriptions of everyones letters and how they depict them, such as ours was irregular. This will help towards the future in designing typefaces in the right nature of a brief, and how to create these different typefaces such as playful, irregular, sleek, stylised, elegant and formal typefaces.
