OUGD404 Design Principles: Studio Brief 01 - What is visual literacy?
Anamorphic Type
For this task we had to design an anamorphic letter form using a minimum of 4 planes. We then designed the letter 'x' as a 3D, anamorphic letter based on one of our group members ideas. We all contributed to the making of the letter and all contributed our idea to how we should go about creating it and how to make it work. We wanted the planes to be coming out in a horizontal manner, therefore we made the squares smaller at the back, and larger up front, this helped to create the correct viewpoint. However, our group did not stick to the brief correctly as we did not base ours on a typeface, we created it based on our ideas. Although Amber was keen for us to change it, all of us were happy with the outcome and didn't believe any changes needed to be made. We also found a typeface that could be related to our letter, that was quite pixilated in its nature, therefore related to the separate planes we create to form the letter 'x.' Overall we were happy with the outcome, and it was something I have seen but haven't really acknowledged, so it was interesting to actually create an anamorphic letter and see how much thought goes into creating it.
It was Channel 4's Ident advertising campaign where I had seen this effect take place. In December 2004, Channel 4 launched a completely new look on-air with idents that in the main present everyday views, but with the '4' logo incorporated briefly as all the elements merge and then part. The amount of detail and thought that must of gone into these is quite impressive, I really like these campaigns and find them so intriguing.
