OUGD504 Blogging Workshop

Blogging Workshop

There is always room for improvement within writing, especially when writing subjectively about your own work. There is a tendency to describe rather than analyse which is smoothing I believe I do. After this workshop I believe I have the potential to really improve my blog posts. Looking into the differences between the original and rewritten posts is quite surprising as the rewritten posts sounds a lot more sophisticated and professional. This is also due to writing in third person, although sometimes this has limitations and writing in first person is necessary like now.

Original

In addition I also wanted to simplify my fold as from my feedback, I found that people said that some bits of the fold were unnecessary so I wanted to re think this as well. Looking back at the study task, I thought about using a concertina fold as this is a really easy, simple fold to use. I tried this out but had trouble with how to print and produce this, so in the end I ended up printing out the two sides and sticking them together. I thought the outcome of the experiment  turned out well although I knew I wanted to experiment a bit more with different stock when I had the design down.

Rewritten

In addition I also wanted to simplify my fold as from my feedback, I found that people said that some bits of the fold were unnecessary so I wanted to re think this as well. This decision was made as I also agreed that bits of the fold were surplus, as it is contradictory having a simple, easy to use process with a complicated fold - both should be straightforward. Looking back at the study task, I thought about using a concertina fold as this is a really easy, simple fold to use. I tried this out but had trouble with how to print and produce this, so in the end I ended up printing out the two sides and sticking them together. Original

I also thought about using a hotdog fold as I have already worked with this fold and I think this fold is really effective to use as its so simple and works like a book by only using one piece of A4. Therefore I also tired this method out and decided to go with the hot dog fold. I think it is more effective and as the layout of my design goes step by step.

Rewritten

The hotdog fold was another option as in previous designs, this fold has proved easy and effective. The way in which the fold works is relevant to the design as the pages work like a book, which is appropriate as both follow on simply. Whereas a concertina fold is more interactive, you would have to turn it over to the other side due to the amount of pages in the design. This is unnecessary when the hotdog fold proves to be simpler therefore is most appropriate.

Notes

  • Describing
  • Analysing
  • Evaluating
  • Contextualising
  • Theorising
  • Narrating

  • Avoid overly subjective language - I enjoy, I feel etc.
  • Justify design decisions by considering their connotations and associations.
  • Blog with purpose - don't waste time over filling with unnecessary or uncritical details.
  • Evaluating also involves suggesting improvements and discussing limitations.
  • Justifying your creative decision is justifying your approach.
  • Take care when using text from other sources, paraphrasing is always best but otherwise quote must be reference.
  • Focus on design decisions and justifications, avoid over describing
