OUGD504 Studio Brief 2 - Idea Generation
Originally this brief daunted me as I don't particularly like logo's as I feel they are really a hit or a miss. I do believe they are an essential tool in the branding of companies and I do get how a cohesive brand appearance can communicate a message to prospects and clients. However branding has never particularly appealed to me and I find the majority of logos are forgotten about. The ones that aren't (big companies/charities) the design is either brilliant or tacky and I personally can't stand images of logos grouped together (example below) as I think over all it looks vulgar. Although that is irrelevant, I think it proves my negativity towards logos. In addition I believe branding isn't my strong point, but that is most likely down to the fact that branding doesn't inspire me as a designer.
However there are ways to overcome this; which is why I really wanted to choose a company that included personal interests of mine and what would inspire and motivate me. This is why I chose Glowing Plants as this company encompasses my own interests of sustainable energy and can allow me to be an earth conscious creative, which really motivates and excites me.
From the research undertaken, I was quite surprised at how much I did like the designs that were related to nature. The next appropriate step was to create thumbnails for initial ideas. I feel that the best approach would be to have the design organic and natural as I want to emphasise the key fact that these glowing plants are natural lighting and a source of sustainable energy. I didn't want to focus on the fact they are genetically modified.
For my initial thumbnails I struggled with how to combine the glowing aspect to the plants. I also considered incorporating the fireflies into the design and also using connotations of the sun to suggest the glow.
