OUGD504 Studio Brief 3 - Research: Secondary Research

OUGD504 Studio Brief 3 - Research: Secondary Research

For the antique feel of the book, it was necessary to research into different antique books. All antique books are fiction/non fiction novel with the same novel layouts. Although these are not photography publications they are still really useful research to undertake to help me with my design aesthetic. The research undertaken was beneficial as it was found that you can have an antique book with really beautiful covers which will be interesting to explore when designing my front cover. These books have either a Victorian or Art Nouveau style. What is consistent through all the research is the type used, all have elaborate, serif fonts with decorative flourishes as this was the style at the time, most likely the Renaissance era. Some of these examples of research are the style of Art Nouveau (1890-1910) and this can also be relevant to the publication as these books can still be considered antique, and elements of a art nouveau can be found at fleet markets.
Traditionally, gold leaf would have been used to create the ornamentation and flourishes for the book cover designs. Antique books tend to stick within the typical victorian layout, whereas we can see that more unique designs were created as technology advanced and printing processes progressed.
