OUGD504 Studio Brief 1 - Evaluation

OUGD504 Studio Brief 1 - Evaluation

I felt that this was a good brief to begin second year with as this design process allows you to consider how you work/the best way to work which you can apply to your work throughout the year.

This brief also gave me the opportunity to look at considerations such as print finishes in which I explored foiling and screen-printing. This was chiefly what I enjoyed about the brief as I tried and tested different variations for the title page and found that this more hands on approach was really enjoyable. Print finishes such as these are therefore are something I want to use throughout the year as they really give a much more creative, hand done feel to the piece. Being more hands on is a method of working that suits me best, rather than producing so much digital work. I feel content finding that this approach, especially screen printing agrees with me, therefore it what I will look toward doing more in the future.

I feel that if I were to redo this brief I could have done more thorough research as I only really have second hand research and focused too much on the design production to do some primary research. This comes down to my time management as although everything was complete, my experimentation with foiling and screen-printing has run over on to studio brief two. This is something I’d prefer not to happen, and for that reason perhaps I should plan my time better for studio brief two that is also a week long brief.

Keeping a clear concept throughout your work is extremely helpful which is something I have learnt through the first year. As I over complicated my design, I had to redo/simplify it that left me apprehensive, but I feel my design overall is appropriate. As I had a clear concept in place, this problem wasn't hard to rectify and I managed to overcome my design problems using my own design process. The stock choice, print finish and fold for me is what I feel makes the leaflet and these are all part of the design production which is what this module is all about.

Experimenting for me was the main feature of this brief, with testing different folding techniques, print finishes and stock. I feel this is something I have lacked on in the first year and consequently something I really want to look into doing more of as I thoroughly enjoy this side of the design process.
