OUGD504 Studio Brief 2 - Research

OUGD504 Studio Brief 2 - Research

For this brief and my selected project, I felt it necessary to research organic, natural based companies and their branding. Green is the predominant colour of all of these as green is the color of life, renewal, nature, and energy. It is associated with meanings of growth, harmony, freshness, safety, fertility, and environment. I don't believe there is any point in striving away from green as the predominant colour to attempt to be 'original' as green and other colours have their own representations therefore using any other colours can convey other associations which could lead to confusion and misunderstanding. These examples that I have selected I believe have successful logos which imply a successful brand identity.

Urban Organics has played on natural style shapes, keeping it clean and simple. The U and O are made to look like a pair of leaves and a tomato. Good example of a metaphor in a logo and altogether it looks very natural and fresh. They have also successfully applied this design to many different aspects, which is useful to see how my design can be applied to such things. In addition the style of this logo can be applied to create a pattern which is something that intrigues me. As logos do not really interest me, creating one which can be applied to a pattern is certainly something that I could consider to add interest.

These are examples of iconic logos that I particularly like, perhaps as they are so simple and elegant, simplistic vector images to me seem to be more successful. This style may be something that I may consider when creating initial sketches. The second image as well is quite relevant to me as it suggests a power source which can be applied to my chosen project. The colours work well as the tan colour resembles the brown paper bag, which is often related to the environment as they are compostable, producing connotations of environmentally friendly.

I also chose these as they are good examples of combination mark logos. The same thing applies that the use of the colour green is most appropriate as well as the natural based vectors. I think it could be quite difficult not to do the obvious thing with this subject, therefore it makes it harder to choose the right decisions for colour, typeface and communication. This research however has helped to inform me of all these decisions and considerations. To me, most if not all of these logos work well, some play on negative space which is an interesting option to consider. I think what works the most however is the typographic choice. All are clear, legible and practical fonts but also are very friendly. This is perhaps to attract more people as awareness within green energy is very important, therefore more friendly, approachable designs are necessary.
