OUGD504 Studio Brief 2 - Development

OUGD504 Studio Brief 2 - Development

These designs were conjured up using influences from research and thought. It was appropriate to keep the designs organic and natural to emphasise the natural lighting aspect of the project, to really encourage people to be amazed by this new, innovative idea. As this could potentially be a source of sustainable energy it is important to keep focus on the pure, natural side of the project, rather than the genetics to keep audiences engaged. The use of green is adequate as although it is obvious, it works best kept with its representations. Audiences will instantly be able to recognise that this project connotes growth, nature, freshness and safety as this what green symbolises. This is best kept and best used so audiences can straight forwardly see the nature and key concepts of the brand.

A range of approaches and considerations have been made for the development of the logo. Simple vectorised images of plants and leaves were first created to give a base for whole design. Nature is the whole basis of this project therefore it is fundamental to the design as you must associate this with the brand. Another key aim was to combine light and nature to represent the glowing plant. The glow was particularly important in representing, as this is the magic of the whole entire project.
Using these grounds, the designs have progressed by relating the plants to the sun. Combining these elements suggests to the audiences green energy as it directly links to light, yet the the leaves blatently relate to nature. These designs work some what effectively as it relates to the whole cause of the project of green energy yet doesn't relate directly to glowing plants.
Another approach was incorporating fireflies into the design to represent the glowing plants. This idea would explore the science of the glowing plants to emphasise the fact that the DNA of fireflies are used to create this glow. The use of simple, yellow dots to symbolise the fireflies work in suggesting light/the glow to the design by the colour and layout of the dots having connotations of sparkle. This implies to audiences that there is magic to this project and something really unique and innovative to the project. They also follow on from the simple, vector leaves to compliment one another.

From these proposals, the next necessary step was to use a combination mark logo, as the project is out of the ordinary is would perhaps be to vague just to use an icon logo. As the project is so advance it is important to really capture peoples attention, therefore making the logo obvious rather than ambiguous is the most appropriate technique to really capture people. Incorporating type into the logo led to trying out simplifying the design. As the type is there to tell you what the project is, perhaps one does not actually have to be so blindingly obvious in the logo.
Once narrowed down to two different designs that take two different approaches, it was best to then apply these to different aspects and marketing tools to see in context how these would work. The final approach to use is still unclear and whether these approaches are effective are unknown. Feedback is the best option next to really get a clear idea of what communicates successfully.
