OUGD504 Studio Brief 3 - Research: Type & Layout
This is taken from a publication called 'And Willem' which is a documentation of youth. This relates really well to this chosen brief and the simplicity of this layout is quite powerful. Due to the nature of the photograph, the minimalism used creates an enigma for the piece which draws you in to read more. The condensed 'C' complements the photograph also as both contain oval shapes. These subtle, yet effective elements work together as a whole to create a very compelling layout.
Concertina folds are used widely amongst photography books. This example below uses stunning photography but also has a subtle, effective layout to complement the subtleness and dreamy qualities of the photographs. Due to the nature of these pieces, the concertina fold works together which the images to take you on a journey and drive the publication as a whole. Furthermore the contemporary layout and juxtaposition considerations enhance the photography creating a very professional and striking aesthetic.
Deciding upon the the right layout is crucial for the right aesthetic for the book. Therefore researching into different publication layouts is essential for gaining a better understanding of what makes a successful publication.

It is interesting how the use of colour is used, where the red line relates to the models red lips, which works in creating the photography stand out more so. This use of colour works in such a way that it feeds your eye, not only towards her lips but along the page as well. In addition the use of white space works strongly for both spreads because of the bold colours used. This really makes the images stand out in a harmonious way as isn't overbearing.
