OUGD504 Studio Brief 3 - Research: Primary Research

OUGD504 Studio Brief 3 - Research: Primary Research

It was necessary to undertake first hand research of photography books to gain a good understanding as my prior knowledge was very limited. Most, if not all the photography books in The Village (Corn Exchange) were very contemporary and sleek. The layouts varied but had the same characteristics that made them successful. All varied and made use of white space, leaving room for the photographs to breath. A lot had one photograph to a spread in most of the pages, with some having supporting images, where they reutilised a layout more than once but scattered throughout the book. This layout method gave the spreads a focus point and the really captivating photographs were placed full bleed on the spread. Overall all the books had the component that less is more, this really emphasises the photography but also is some what of a trend within photography books as it is a very contemporary way of designing, yet is also effective and successful.

I then went on to look at publications that were more relevant to my chosen concept. One in particular caught my attention - 'The Holy Bible.' This used a traditional aesthetic of a bible but it was interesting considering the production method, such as the debossing and foiling. The use of photographs within this, overlaid on the text, to me looked more interesting than the over modern designs. It works effectively as the photographs are also antique, therefore the colours work and you can clearly see the design aesthetic.

The production methods were all of the highest quality, most used a gloss for the high quality photographs for further enhancement. In addition the stock were really beautiful colours, which really draws the viewer in and relates to the target audience as some were holographic and bright, fun colours suggesting a younger target audience. Therefore I visited the arts and supplies shop Fred Aldous to look at the wide variety of stock in consideration for my publication.
