OUGD504 Studio Brief 2 - Evaluation
For this brief I chose a company that produces glowing plants to create a brand identify for. This briefed I found I struggled with as I am not particularly interested in brand identity and find it is a weakness of mine as a designer. Although I was quite anxious of this brief, it is good to attempt to improve your weak points to progress.
To help overcome my apprehension I made sure to choose a kick starter project that I was interested in. Glowing Plants allowed me to explore these interests of Fair trade, organic and nature by choosing this as the concept for the brand identity. I wanted to focus on this aspect of the brand to emphasise that it was a natural source of light using no electricity to help market the project. From feedback however it was suggested that I take a more scientific approach, driving the fact that it was a new, innovative idea. Ultimately however, I decided it was best to stick to my beliefs and keep my green energy strategy despite what the tutors thought. Although brand identity is a weak point of mine, I knew that keeping this concept would keep me interested in the brief and I believe a produce a larger audience market. I think that using the key selling point of it being genetically modified would put people off. These problems then led to me questioning whether or not I had chosen a bad kick starter project to work on, but due to the time limitations, I felt it best to carry on with the project, with my original concept.
With this brief, I feel that I did quite a bit of development work, as I really wanted an effective logo. I also feel my branding strategy is clear throughout of using green energy as the unique selling point to appeal to a large range of audiences. However I feel I struggled in creating a logo as there is such a huge mass of green energy logos, it was hard to create something unique and interesting. I am happy with what I produced overall but I still feel unexcited by logos.
Although I have savoured the opportunity to work on my weak point, I feel that this is my weakness only as it does not excite or motivate me, which is okay. In the future I will not avoid brand identity, but next time I think I need to take a completely different approach and do something more print based. I wish now looking back I created something using mono print or letterpress - which from studio brief one I learnt I enjoy using more hands on methods. In addition I know myself that I do not like vector images therefore if I could redo this brief I would. However I still am happy with my overall outcome and know now to take what I have learnt so far on this module and use this time to take the opportunity to explore more print based media.
