OUGD504 Studio Brief 1 - Production Considerations

OUGD504 Studio Brief 1 - Production Considerations

As the target audience is art/design students, a well designed, thought out design is pertinent, therefore considerations such as stock choices and print finishes are really valuable for professionalism. The concept is to create a simple, easy to use pocket book for design students to refer to. This is achieved by using the London Underground tube map as design inspiration as it is proven to be lucid and effective. As this leaflet is an instructional booklet, it must be logical and in the right order, therefore the booklet itself needs to be simple to use for anyone, which the hot dog fold is. Furthermore, the hot dog fold book takes a few simple steps to create and works with any scale, making it the most user friendly. A4 sized paper was chosen for the scale of the booklet as this is folded into a booklet that is biggest enough to read clearly and small enough to fit in your pocket/wallet for safe keeping. Furthermore this will be cheaper to produce on a larger scale opposed to A3, and the design is not full bleed therefore A4 is suitable.

The design uses a simple 3x3 grid and uses a two-colour scheme. This aids the simple and easy to use concept however the stock - Lavender Marble paper from G F Smith (Marlmarque range) really makes the design compelling. It is effective as it isn't garish or bold but has quite a subtle texture to it. As the design is minimalist it makes sense to chose a subtle stock so the whole design goes hand in hand and doesn't contradict each other.

It was felt that foiling would create this appeal as the metallic finish creates a really striking end result. As the design is small, handheld and pocket size, this is appropriate to help it stand out to its audience.

In terms of commercial applications, if I were to produce this leaflet for the students of Leeds College of Art, a number of factors would have to be considered - printing, screen printing, stock and the production - each page would need to be cut and folded in order to create the fold.

Estimate of Students: 1,500
Stock: G F Smith - Marlmarque - A4 - 90 gsm
Digital Print: A4xOwn Paper - 20p = £300
